140 Free Non Reciprocal Directory Links

Dec 19 2010

Directory submissions have never been a complete answer for link building and are no replacement for organic links but they can be useful for new sites with no history or muddying the water if you have quality backlinks that you do not want your competitors finding easily.

I never recommend paying for a directory submission or review unless it is from a niche or local site that is likely to pass traffic. Reciprocal links should be avoided unless you are 100% sure the site is going to link back and is not considered to be from a bad neighborhood.

In my search for niche directories I have come across many general directories which do not require signup, payment or reciprocal links.

Below you will find 140 free directory sites.

Low Budget Reputation Management

Dec 07 2010

Reputation Management does not always need to be costly or time consuming. Here are some simple and low budget basic reputation management guidelines that businesses of all size can benefit from.

Listen using Google Alerts

Visit http://www.google.com/alerts and subscribe to the alerts for your company name. This is a good and free way to monitor conversations on a daily basis. An alternative to a Google Alert is a targeted Google search.

Research and engage

Using the Google alerts you can see where your customer is leaving feedback. Typically this will be social media but could also include review sites to blogs.
Setup accounts on the networks which are relevant to your customer so that you can be contacted directly and respond to any feedback.

Resolve and promote

All negative feedback should be resolved by addressing the core issue with a solid response that clearly states you’re position and offers a solution. This should go above and beyond the service a customer service department would provide. Think CEO rather than customer service personal.

Positive feedback should be acknowledged and thanked. If the feedback is particularly good it could be promoted to other areas of the business.

SEO In a Squeeze

Dec 02 2010

You have an extremely tight budget and only a small amount of time you can dedicate each month to SEO related tasks. Is it possible to execute a succesful SEO strategy with limited resource?

This is often the question asked by small to meduim business owners or someone that wears many hats within an organisation with SEO being just one of them!

Here are some suggestions on how to make life a little easier…

Priorities

Complete an audit to identify your SEO priorities. The audit should focus on the key building blocks of an SEO strategy Accessible Content, Keyword targeting, Link Building and Social

Part of the output from the audit should be a list of priority tasks to complete. The tasks should follow SMART criteria (Specific,Measurable, Attainable & Relevant).

Work on a single task at a time

By not juggling multiple SEO tasks you can ensure that each task is worked on until completion. This could be achieved by setting time aside each week specifically for SEO or setting a time limit for tasks that have no hard completion date such as link building.

Reporting

Just because time is limited it does not mean reporting should be ignored. At very least reporting should include core KPI’s.

As SEO is a long term process that has no defined ending it is important to keep historical data so that you can maximise ROI when defining and working on new tasks.

SEO Myths – The Worst Offenders

Nov 24 2010

For better or worse the SEO industry is filled with a huge amount of misinformation and myths. This is by no means the complete list but more a list of what I think are ‘the worst offenders’. The SEO tactics that many people think are simple methods to get results.

Meta keywords.

Originally used to help the search engines by listing the important keywords on a page. They were heavily abused by spammers and have since been deemed irrelevant by Google.
Meta keywords are still being used by Bing but have a limited value, while Yahoo recommends usage but value is not known.

In the UK Google has a reported market share of over 92%. Can you justify spending a large amount of time optimising Meta keywords which hold little to unknown value to 8% of the market share?

Keyword Density

Have you ever come across a page that does not quite make sense but has obviously been optimised for a specific keyword? This is usually the result of keyword density amends being applied to the page. The thinking behind this metric is that the higher the keyword density on the page the better it will rank.

The calculation is based on the frequency the keyword appears divided by the total word count for the document.

So if a document has a 100 words and 2 of those words are the keyword the keyword density would be 2%.

If keyword density is a high value metric optimisation would be as simple as increasing your sites keyword density to a higher value than your competitors. Furthermore keyword density ignores all other on page factors and the proximity of other keywords.

Some believe that aiming for 3-5% keyword density is the optimum range for pages to rank well. The below chart shows that keyword density has no overriding affect on page rankings.

Using the keyword ‘tractors’ I performed a keyword density check on the top 5 ranking sites for the term on Google.co.uk.

1. http://www.tractorsandfarming.com/ – 3.81%

2. http://www.startintractors.co.uk/ – 3.11%

3. http://www.tractors.co.uk/ – 7.05%

4. http://www.kenttractors.com/ – 2.81%

5. http://www.tractortradex.co.uk/ – 3.03%

Having a higher keyword density does not necessarily increase page rank.

Increasing the volume of keywords in copy can improve ranking but keyword density is not a factor Search Engines used when determining relevancy. There is no ‘golden’ percentage that will guarantee a high page rank.

Using a Google sitemap increases ranking

A Google Sitemap is an xml file that lists every page on your website and submits them to the Google index.

Google states: ‘But, it’s important to note that submitting a Sitemap will not guarantee inclusion or influence your PageRank. It should act as a complement to compelling and useful content instead of a replacement of your SEO activities. ‘
